Birding By Ear with Lauri Shainsky

Have you ever wondered what is that descending trill in the shrubs outside the door? That “sweet sweet little more sweet” in the cedar, or “jiddet, jiddet, jiddet” in the maple?
If so, then you will want to join Lauri Shainsky, naturalist/ecologist for a creative session in the garden learning how to bird by ear.
ABOUT THE CLASS
During this class we will listen to bird sound, and develop ways of describing the sound to ourselves using imagery and words. These "handles" help us remember the sounds and associate them with a particular bird.
We will walk, listen, and discuss the myriad of handles. We slow down to the speed of nature to deepen our observations–using wide angle vision and “fox walking”. This attunement to bird sounds and the practice of giving them handles will enrich your enjoyment of birding and expand your capacity to connect with birds in new ways.
A life long “sweet sweet little more sweet” as the brown creeper reminds us to embrace.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Lauri is a naturalist/ecologist and has been leading birding sessions since 1997. She established and operated the nonprofit Wolftree teaching children and adults about ecology in the outdoors. They designed and operated a citizen science program called NatureMapping aimed at feeding data into the National Biodiversity program. We are thrilled to have her expertise.
What to bring:
Small notebook and pen/pencil,
Binoculars (not required),
If you wear a hat; a brimless one is best
Program fee for each class is $40 for 2 hours, and includes your entry to the garden.
